Safe Place Survivor Stories

“When I met my boyfriend, I had a degree and a good job. He was charming and sweet, and he helped manage my depression and anxiety. But after he took charge of my medication refills and doses, I began to struggle more and eventually lost my job. He ridiculed me, verbally abused me, and even locked me in my bedroom.

“One day, I escaped when he was away. I was found wandering the streets. After an ER visit, mental health support, and some recovery time, I knew I had to leave town, so I called Safe Place in Mitchell. An advocate picked me up at the bus station. From there, I was able to make a plan in a safe environment. Safe Place helped me leave the state and go to my parents’ home to get back on my feet.”
